Sound Insulation Testing

Sound Insultation Testing is carried out post-construction to ensure that party walls and floors comply with Approved Document E of the Building Regulations.

Our Consultants assist a range of clients including architects, developers and project managers meet the required sound insultation regulations.

Sound insultation testing is often required as part of a planning application to ensure that dwellings have acceptable levels of noise attenuation. The aim of the test is to measure and subsequently minimise sound transmission through rooms and floors within a building. This ultimately improves quality of life for those living and working in the property.

There are two types of sound insultation tests: Airbourne and Impact

Airbourne Testing BS EN ISO 140-4

This type of sound test is carried out using a large dodecahedron speaker and a sound level meter which is placed within the source room and the receiver room. The sound level meter records noise levels and our consultants will determine whether they exceed an acceptable level.

Impact Testing BS EN ISO 140-7

Impact sound testing uses a tapping machine placed in an upper floor or apartment and the noise level is measured in the lower floor or apartment. Again, these are measured and accessed to determine if the levels exceed an acceptable frequency.
